Castle’s career-defining victory at ROH’s marquee event capped an incredible show and an incredible year for the company.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Here’s a match-by-match look at Final Battle 2017:</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>In the opening contest, which featured two former ROH World Television Champions, Matt Taven, accompanied to the ring by his Kingdom teammates (and supposed fellow conspiracy victims) Vinny Marseglia and TK O’Ryan, continued the roll he has been on of late by defeating the talented Will Ospreay.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Taven went for a frog splash, but Ospreay caught him with a small package for a near fall. Ospreay then followed up with Spanish Fly for another near fall. Ospreay went for the Os Cutter, but Taven blocked it and hit Climax for the win.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>In a grudge tag team match, War Machine (Hanson and Rowe) gained a measure of revenge on The Addiction (Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian) by scoring a decisive victory over the disrespectful duo.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Despite being at a size disadvantage, The Addiction actually took the fight to War Machine and had the upper hand for the majority of the match. Once War Machine got the momentum, though, they couldn’t be stopped. War Machine hit Thor’s Hammer on Daniels and then followed up with Fallout for the pinfall.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>The dream match between Jay Lethal and Marty Scurll lived up to its billing. When Scurll first issued the challenge to Lethal, he said he wanted the “old Jay Lethal” -- meaning the one who would do whatever it took to win, even if it meant bending the rules. Lethal told Scurll to be careful what he wished for -- and those words proved prescient, as Lethal out-villained “the Villain” to steal the victory.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Scurll used an umbrella as a weapon and followed with a release piledriver for a near fall, but Lethal recovered and got his hands on another umbrella Scurll had brought into the ring. Lethal swung and missed with the umbrella, but as the referee turned his back to remove the umbrella, Lethal nailed Scurll with a low blow and then hit Lethal Injection for the win. Lethal did not seem pleased with the manner in which he won.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>ROH World Tag Team Champions The Motor City Machine Guns (Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley) successfully defended their titles against Best Friends (Beretta and Chuckie T.).</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>With the crowd firmly behind them, Best Friends came close on a few occasions to winning the match. It certainly looked good for them when Chuckie T. hit a snap piledriver on Sabin, whose momentum carried him right into a waiting Beretta. Before Beretta could attempt to finish off Sabin, however, Sabin executed a double-leg takedown and flipped on top of Beretta for the three count.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>In another title bout, Silas Young scored the biggest victory of his career (with a huge assist from his buddy Beer City Bruiser), winning the ROH World Television Title in a Four Corner Survival Match over defending champion Kenny King, Punishment Martinez and Shane Taylor.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>After King hit Royal Flush on Taylor, Martinez followed with a twisting senton on Taylor to eliminate him. Later in the match, while Bruiser distracted the referee, Young busted one of Bruiser’s beer bottles over King’s head. The referee turned around to see Young covering King and made the three count.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>The match came down to Young and Martinez. It appeared that Martinez was going to walk out of Final Battle as TV champion after he hit his South of Heaven chokeslam on Young, but Bruiser pulled Young out of the ring before the referee could complete the three count. Martinez retaliated by taking out Bruiser with his Journey into Darkness dive off the top to the outside, but in doing so, Martinez injured his ribs. Young took advantage of a weakened Martinez and went on to finish him off with Misery.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>When ROH COO Joe Koff made the announcement on “Ring of Honor Wrestling” recently that Bully Ray and Tommy Dreamer would face the Briscoes in a New York Street Fight at Final Battle, he said the match “will be brutal, extreme and f’n hardcore!” He was right. The Briscoes defeated former ECW icons Bully and Dreamer in a violent, bloody brawl that saw tables, chairs, trash cans, kendo sticks, a grater, the kitchen sink and even lightsabers used as weapons.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Bully -- who competed in this match against physician’s orders due to the head trauma he suffered at the hands of Jay Briscoe at Death Before Dishonor in September - and Dreamer more than held their own against the maniacal Briscoes, but in the end, the brothers from Sandy Fork, Del., hit 3D on a bloody Bully on a table, and then Mark Briscoe came off the top with a Froggy Bow that put Bully through the table. Mark covered him for the win.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Before the next match, Ian Riccaboni announced that there will be a tournament in 2018 to determine the first Women of Honor Champion. Joining Riccaboni on the stage for the announcement were WOH competitors Brandi Rhodes, Deonna Purrazzo, Jenny Rose, Jessie Brooks, Kelly Klein, Mandy Leon, Stella Grey, Sumie Sakai and Mayu Iwatani.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champions The Hung Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson of The Young Bucks and Adam Page), representing Bullet Club, successfully defended their titles against Flip Gordon and CMLL stars Dragon Lee and Titan in a fast-paced match filled with insane, high-flying moves. The challengers pushed the champions to the limit before The Hung Bucks nailed Gordon and Lee with a Super IndyTaker/Rite of Passage combination, scoring the pin on Gordon.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>After the match, Scorpio Sky -- who had been sitting in on commentary for the match -- went into the ring seemingly to check on his friend Gordon. But then The Addiction came out to the ring, and Sky shockingly joined Daniels and Kazarian in attacking both teams, apparently signaling the formation of a new alliance.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>In the main event for the ROH World Championship, Castle had The Boys back with him, while Cody -- sporting blonde hair reminiscent of his father, the late “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes -- came out with his wife, Brandi.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>At one point during the match, Cody grabbed a chair, but before he could use it as a weapon, The Boys snatched it away from him. Brandi responded by diving off the top rope into The Boys outside the ring. The referee ejected The Boys and Brandi from ringside.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Cody ended up getting busted open after being pulled headfirst into the ring post. After Cody inadvertently knocked down the referee, Castle caught him in his new submission finisher (which he calls the Julie Newmar). Cody tapped, but the referee was still down and didn’t see it.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Having dodged a bullet, Cody came back to hit Cross Rhodes on Castle, but much to the surprise of Cody and everyone else, Castle kicked out of the finishing move that has won Cody so many matches. Castle then avoided a Disaster Kick and followed with Bang-A-Rang to pin Cody and become ROH World Champion.</div> Sun, 17 Dec 2017 13:31:08 +0000 Chris Hall 561931 at http://www.rohwrestling.com Flip Gordon On His War With Bullet Club http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/flip-gordon-his-war-bullet-club <div class="field field-news-photo"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/media/photos/flip-article">flip-article</a> </div> </div> </div> <!--break--><div>After hot prospect Flip Gordon signed with Ring of Honor this past spring, he was met by a welcoming committee that was anything but welcoming.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>The talented newcomer repeatedly was the victim of “harmless ribs” (which in reality weren’t so harmless) by Bullet Club members The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson), ROH World Champion Cody, Kenny Omega, Marty Scurll and Adam Page. Bullet Club captured their hazing of Gordon on episodes of its popular “Being The Elite” YouTube series.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>The typical scenario involved Bullet Club luring Gordon into what appeared to be a friendly situation, only for Matt Jackson to reveal their true intentions by grazing Gordon’s hand and asking, “Where do you think you’re going?” That inevitably led to a beatdown and Bullet Club mockingly chanting in unison, “Welcome to Ring of Honor.”</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Gordon finally had enough of being fodder for Bullet Club, and now he is the aggressor. He recruited two of the best high flyers in CMLL in Dragon Lee and Titan to team with him against ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champions The Hung Bucks (The Young Bucks and Page) at the Final Battle pay-per-view this Friday Dec. 15 at The Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>With the match just days away, ROHWrestling.com caught up with Gordon to discuss his war with Bullet Club and his showdown with them at Final Battle.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div><strong>ROH: You didn’t start this war with Bullet Club. I came to ROH with something to prove and that’s that I can hang with the best in the world.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div><strong>ROH: You’ve been constantly asked by BC, “where do you think you’re going?” So, what’s your answer to them?</strong></div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Flip: I’m going to Final Battle to become the new ROH Six-Man Tag Team Champions with my Flip Army and my amigos Dragon Lee and Titan right by my side!</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Gordon has come a long way in less than three years in pro wrestling, and now he has the opportunity to become a champion in ROH and get the last laugh on his tormentors in Bullet Club.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div><a href="http://www.rohwrestling.com/ippv">Can the international dream team of Gordon, Lee </a><a href="http://www.rohwrestling.com/ippv">and</a><a href="http://www.rohwrestling.com/ippv"> Titan make history? King survived the onslaught and went on the offensive after Coleman missed a hurricanrana attempt off the top rope. King hit a T-bone suplex into a bridge for a near fall.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Coleman came back and hit Trinity for one near fall and Sky Splitta for another. King went for the Royal Flush, but Coleman slipped out of it and shoved King into Taylor, who had jumped up on the apron. King then took out Taylor with a corkscrew plancha and hit Royal Flush on Coleman to retain his title.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>After the match, Punishment Martinez hit the ring and went after King. King thwarted Martinez at first, but then Taylor and Martinez double-teamed him. Silas Young, who had been sitting in on commentary, entered the ring and joined Martinez and Taylor in stomping the champion. (Martinez, Taylor and Young will challenge for King’s ROH World Television Title in a Four Corner Survival Match at Final Battle Dec. 15 on pay-per-view.) The three challengers then began fighting each other.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div><strong>The Addiction Call For War Machine To Be Fired</strong></div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>The Addiction (Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian) interrupted the show. Daniels talked about Ray Rowe being suspended for 30 days because of the incident in which a fan was injured as a result of Rowe throwing Kazarian into the audience. Daniels demanded that ROH fire both members of War Machine, The Addiction’s opponents at Final Battle. Hanson came out and attacked Daniels and Kazarian.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>As Hanson pounded away on Daniels, Kazarian grabbed a chair and nailed Hanson with it repeatedly. The Addiction got electrical tape and taped Hanson’s wrists onto the ring rope. Daniels then got a box cutter from under the ring and used it to cut off some of Hanson’s beard. Daniels actually threatened to cut off Hanson’s ear, but security hit the ring to stop him from making good on it. The Addiction beat up the security members, but Hanson got free and went after them. Daniels and Kazarian escaped.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div><strong>The Briscoes Call Out Bully Ray and Tommy Dreamer</strong></div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Jay Briscoe said that Bully and Dreamer are cowards. He said he and Mark ruined Bully’s retirement speech, attacked Dreamer at one of his own shows, and trashed Bully’s training school, yet Bully and Dreamer still won’t answer their challenge.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Bully and Dreamer came down to ringside, but a sea of security prevented them from entering the ring. ROH COO Joe Koff tried to calm down Bully and Dreamer. Bully told Koff that he has to let this happen.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Jay Briscoe said, “Who would’ve ever thought we’d see the day Bully Ray and Tommy Dreamer would take orders from a short, old man?”</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>An uncharacteristically fired-up Koff got in the ring and told the Briscoes that they don’t make matches, he does. He said the Briscoes should be careful what they wish for, because they will indeed get their match against Bully and Dreamer at Final Battle (it will be a New York Street Fight). Koff said the match “will be brutal, extreme and f’n hardcore!”</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Bully and Dreamer hit the ring and charged the Briscoes. The two teams brawled briefly before security pulled them apart.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div><strong>Matt Taven (w/Vinny Marseglia and TK O’Ryan) vs. Jay Lethal</strong></div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Lethal tried to adhere to the Code of Honor, but Taven disrespected him, and that infuriated Lethal. Lethal was all over Taven until Marseglia and O’Ryan distracted him, which allowed Taven to gain the upper hand.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Lethal regained the advantage, however, and hit a flying elbow off the top rope for a near fall. Marty Scurll, who had been sitting in on commentary, went to ringside and slid his umbrella into the ring. He encouraged Lethal -- who will face Scurll at Final Battle -- to use it as a weapon. Lethal picked up the umbrella and appeared conflicted, but he ultimately tossed it at Scurll. As he did so, Taven snuck up behind Lethal and rolled him up for the victory.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div><strong>Official Contract Signing for ROH World Title Match at Final Battle</strong></div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>ROH World Champion Cody, decked out in a fur coat and sunglasses, was accompanied by his wife, Brandi Rhodes. He also had two servants with him as well as champagne and a plate of meats and cheeses. Ian Riccaboni asked Cody if he had any words before signing the contract. Cody told Castle he really should try the meats and cheeses, but then he proceeded to remove all of them from the tray. Riccaboni told Cody that he doesn’t seem to be grasping the gravity of the situation. Cody’s response was to drink champagne with Brandi.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Castle wasn’t impressed with Cody’s antics and told the champion he’s going to break his heart at Final Battle. He said he was excited when he first heard Cody was coming to ROH and really wanted to like him. Castle said once Cody arrived, however, all he saw was “a boy who isn’t worthy of being ROH World Champion.” Castle said Cody is “overdressed, overpaid and overrated.”</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>That struck a nerve. Cody stood up and threw off his fur coat and sunglasses. Castle signed the contract, and then Cody did as well.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>The signing ended with an intense staredown between the champion and challenger.</div> Wed, 13 Dec 2017 15:42:34 +0000 Chris Hall 560576 at http://www.rohwrestling.com Flip Gordon takes on Marty Scurll In Philadelphia http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/flip-gordon-takes-marty-scurll-philadelphia <div class="field field-news-photo"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/media/photos/philly-flip">philly-flip</a> </div> </div> </div> <!--break--><div>The biggest year in Ring of Honor history comes in for a landing at the historic 2300 Arena in Philadelphia when your favorite stars from the Best Wrestling on the Planet do battle in an international television taping just ONE NIGHT after Final Battle!</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>All of your favorite stars, including Bullet Club, Dalton Castle, Jay Lethal, Silas Young, Best Friends, Will Ospreay and more will be in the City of Brotherly Love as the fallout from Final Battle commences! Anyone who purchases a bracelet or makes a donation will get their photo taken with Sakai and Cheeseburger. All of the proceeds go directly to Sammy and her family.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>“I found out about Sammy through Sumie. I would always see Sumie write messages of encouragement and support for her,” Cheeseburger said. “Before the last Philadelphia show [in October], we talked about Sammy and I found out she would actually be visiting to see Ring of Honor. I was surprised to learn that she was actually a fan of mine as well.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>“When Sumie approached me with the idea to help raise money for the #SammyStrong fundraiser during Philadelphia and New York, I was happy to jump on board and do anything I could to help out Sammy and her family.”</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>This past July, Sammy was diagnosed with stage IV Wilms Tumor, a type of cancer that starts in the kidneys. Over the past several months, Sammy has undergone multiple surgeries in which her tumors and right kidney were removed and a feeding tube was inserted. She’s also endured chemotherapy and radiations treatments and had about 30 blood transfusions.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Sakai learned of Sammy on Twitter and reached out to her. Sakai has visited Sammy at her home and at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and she keeps in touch with Sammy and her mother via text messages. When ROH held a live event in Philadelphia in October, Sakai arranged for Sammy and her family to be her guests at the show and meet all the stars of ROH, including Cheeseburger.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>“She was an absolute sweetheart,” Cheeseburger said. “She was so happy to meet all of the Ring of Honor men and women. I gave her a personalized 8x10 as a gift, and she gave me a big hug in return. TV days are very hectic so I was disappointed we did not have more time to talk. I'm looking forward to meeting her again in the future.”</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Like many people, cancer has touched Cheeseburger’s own family, so he can sympathize with what Sammy and her family are going through.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>“Several of the women in my family have had cancer,” he said. “My mother is a survivor of breast cancer herself. In 2015, she had surgery. Thankfully, it was caught early enough and doctors were able to remove it.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>“I’m ecstatic to help out in any way possible. I’m happy Ring of Honor has allowed myself and Sumie to assist with the #SammyStrong fundraiser. Gresham has flourished in singles and tag team competition but it was a recent victory in a triple-threat match at ROH Elite that has led to this match.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Gresham defeated the debuting Simon Grimm and 2017 Top Prospect Tournament Winner Josh “The Goods” Woods in Fort Lauderdale, outsmarting the competition and winning via a quick roll-up on Woods. There is no shame in losing to a world-class and world-traveled competitor like Gresham, who at age 29, has wrestled in 14 countries across four continents with over a decade of experience. But Woods feels like the triple threat environment gave Gresham an advantage. The 2017 Top Prospect made the challenge and it has been accepted! It is “The Goods” vs. “The Octopus” in the Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom before Final Battle kicks off in a digital exclusive!</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>THE DAWGS VS. CHEESEBURGER &amp; A PARTNER OF HIS CHOICE</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Cheeseburger and Will Ferrara became the two head trainers at the ROH Dojo in December 2016. For the next six months, the two formed a bond and a tag team, one that picked up wins first in Future of Honor competition before moving on to ROH Television and ultimately challenging the Young Bucks for the ROH World Tag Team Championships in Chicago in June.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Tension developed between the two, as does within any team focused on tag team success. But the tension bubbled up and then over during their biggest match, ever, against Matt and Nick Jackson. Ferrara believed ‘Burger cost them the ROH World Tag Team Titles, an opinion the fans adamantly disagreed with. Ferrara began to target ‘Burger, attacking him at every turn. Ferrara and ‘Burger met in singles action in Atlanta. Ferrara picked up the victory and continued to beat down ‘Burger. “The Big Dawg” Rhett Titus made his return to seemingly defuse the tension before joining in on the attack.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Titus and Ferrara formed a team now known as The Dawgs. The Dawgs defeated the team now known as IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champions Roppongi 3K in their last Ring of Honor match and have been successful in the tag team ranks. But Cheeseburger has not forgotten the beatings and beatdowns he has received. In New York, before Final Battle goes on the air, Cheeseburger will get a shot at revenge on The Dawgs and he won’t be coming alone! ‘Burger brings a partner of his choosing to NYC to see if The Dawgs’ bark is louder than their bite!</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>These matches will air in the near future on ROH social media channels but can be seen FIRST if you are there LIVE with us at the Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom!</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Every year, Final Battle is the biggest event on the Ring of Honor calendar! It was also the city that saw the team crumble. In a match against the ROH World Six Man Tag Team Champions, Adam Page and the Young Bucks, Jay Briscoe turned his back on Bully Ray, bludgeoning him with the point of a table, giving the hardcore icon a concussion.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Later that night, it wasn't Mark Briscoe or any other ROH star there to accompany Bully Ray to the medical facility but instead, Tommy Dreamer, Bully's best friend. They both heard the news: any blow or impact to the head was not only jeopardizing Bully Ray's career but his future well-being.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Dreamer would confront Jay Briscoe on an episode of ROH Television while it seemed like Mark Briscoe was caught in the middle. Mark and Bully formed a successful tag team while Jay was clearing his head. For weeks, Jay tried to persuade Mark that the only thing he should focus on was the Briscoes winning their record-breaking ninth ROH World Tag Team title.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>And in Philadelphia, the message got through loud and clear. As Bully Ray addressed the sold-out 2300 Arena as he had done on the Global Wars Tour, offering heartfelt thank yous to the Honor Nation, Jay Briscoe emerged to confront Bully Ray. Mark Briscoe hit the ring, with fans hoping he would break up the chaos. Instead, Mark added to it. First, Bully Ray went down, then the Briscoes 3B'ed Tommy Dreamer. The sold-out crowd stood stunned.</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>It would be a month until fans would see Bully Ray again. In Fort Lauderdale, the Briscoes took the ring to claim victory and to state their future plans. But Bully Ray and Tommy Dreamer hit the ring. With ROH officials including COO Joe Koff trying to prevent disaster, a challenge was issued and a match made. Bully Ray has signed a medical release allowing him to compete against physician's orders and will team with his best friend Tommy Dreamer in The Big Apple to take on the eight-time ROH World Tag Team Champions The Briscoes in a NEW YORK STREET FIGHT!</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Has Bully Ray made the right decision? Is revenge worth risking permanent health impairment? And, if the Briscoes win, will they know when enough is enough? In a historic venue where both teams have established their respective legacies, this match is about more than wins and losses: it is about honor, dignity, and respect!</div><div>&nbsp;</div><div>Every year, Final Battle is the biggest event on the Ring of Honor calendar!
